Birds tussling outside the winery

I saw some birds of prey locked at the talons outside the winery and had the camera nearby.  It reminds you how O’Vineyards is pretty rural/wild.  Hawks just wander up and use our front deck when they feel like it.

Now there’s a debate going on about whether these birds or fighting or mating.  My money is on fight, but that’s mostly because I don’t want to fathom that I’ve interrupted their cloacal kissing.  If you don’t know what that means, look it up.

Here’s some video. You be the judge!

Has our wine driven these birds to violence or made them lusty?

Oh I was listening to Camille when this all happened so excuse the bizarre but pointed soundtrack.

I managed to take some pictures yesterday.  Lots of photos of the Syrah and Cabernet finishing veraison.  That’s the period when the plant turns the grapes purple.

I also found some baby birds newly hatched in the Syrah!

For more pictures of grapes turning purple, check out this Love That Languedoc post about veraison in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

The starling birds migrated south a few months ago but I never posted this. It’s so wintry and I have to prune. I wish I could fly south sometimes. But the wine is delicious up here, so I stay put.

Anyway, a few months ago, I was having a business lunch at the winery when this huge flock of starlings passed over the vineyard to fly south for the winter. But they stopped at the vines and flew back and forth. I ran out into the vines and caught some of the migration on my flip. Pretty awesome footage! What a lucky experience. The birds formed a perfect dome over me.

It’s worth going to fullscreen!
